Eyes of Beauty

I got an incredible compliment the other day from a good friend of mine. She said that ever since she started reading the Beauty Dialogues, she is seeing Beauty everywhere, all around her.

This is the highest accolade I can ever imagine receiving, and I’m still stunned by it.

May we all be given the grace of seeing beauty, everywhere around us…

The Will to Live

A close friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, one of these rare and particularly scary types of cancer that galvanizes one’s full attention. Here’s a quote she shared with me this morning from a book she’s reading:

"A diagnosis of cancer is a personal encounter with the will to live… the impulse toward wholeness and integrity that is buried in the heart of every living thing."

My friend, who has stepped up to this challenge with incredible
courage, has articulated her ‘impulse towards wholeness and integrity’
in a number of ways. One of which is a great deal of consciousness
about her physical surroundings, making sure her home feels truly
harmonious and reflects the integrity and beauty of her inner life, as
well as the specificities of her history and ‘place’ in the world.
Another is to bring out all those beautiful things she owns and display
or use them, rather than keep them safely stored for ‘special’ times.

In the threat of death, she’s discovered the secret of life … to
give herself up to life fully; to look for & experience the
wholeness and harmony in every moment.

She’s never been more beautiful.

Venus

I watched an exquisite movie last night, part of the Mill Valley Film Festival, called Venus. It’s a British film, starring the still-gorgeous Peter O’Toole as an old man, a venerable ACtor, who falls in love (in a most stylish, tasteful & elegant way) with a slightly trashy 16 year old girl from the north of England.

The thing about this movie, which started out making me laugh and later choked me with tears, is that O’Toole, by looking at this brash young girl with eyes of beauty, makes her truly beautiful.

Beautiful film, fundamental truth.

Never Shout at a Bear

This is the introduction to a true story about a dear friend of mine, Pele Rouge of Resonance, and her profound encounter with a bear while living in the wilderness a few years ago. It’s a fabulous story, written for children, about the wisdom of nature and it’s available now on DVD (the book will be out next year).

The DVD itself is absolutely beautiful, narrated by Pele with music by Gentle Thunder & illustrations by Finnish artist Outi Kuma – I recommend you pick one up for all your beauty-loving friends, but definitely get one for all the children you know because their young hearts & minds, especially, will thrive on nature’s truth, and this will touch them directly.
